Nothing grabs an audience's attention more effectively than a clever optical illusion. Combine that with an ingenious ad campaign and you get this brilliant mobile billboard for The Red Cross, currently gracing the streets of San Francisco.

It's photo journalism, meets Hollywood blockbuster movie poster, and it is turning plenty of heads wherever it parks itself. Enthusiastic onlookers have been snapping up photos of the mobile billboard and posting, uploading and sharing them online with friends. This is a brilliant example of how an audience can further promote the exposure of a great advertising campaign through mobile phones, blogs and sites such as flicker. By Andy G

It's not unusual these days to see the name Abu Dhabi, the capital of UAE (a constitutional federation of seven emirates; Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al-Qaiwai, Ras Al-Khaimah and Fujairah. The federation was formally established on 2 December 1971.) competing with Dubai and other Gulf States in the race for development, trade, tourism, culture and many other industrial fields. An example to this, is the biggest single arts and cultural development in the Arabian Gulf is earmarked for Saadiyat Island** 500m off the coast of Abu Dhabi.
Aimed at putting the emirate on the cultural map. Local and international names are working their magic on the so-called Cultural District, including UAE's Khalid Al Najjar, Yuri Avvakumov from Russia, American Greg Lynn, Briton David Adjaye, Pei-Zhu from China and Korea's Seung H-Sang.
The whole thing should be done and dusted by 2018, with the island's major arts centres - designed by Jean Nouvel, Tadao Ando, Zaha Hadid and Frank Gehry - ready from 2012

-Performance Arts Centre
This 62m-high structure has been designed by Zaha Hadid.
Up to 6,300 visitors will be able to spread themselves between its musical hall, concerthall, opera house and two theaters. The concert hall is the building's summit and a huge window behind the stage will look out to the see.

-Guggenheim Abu Dhabi
Frank Gehry has created a four-storey design arranged around a courtyard for what will be the worlds largest Guggenheim. The 30,000sq m museum will have three layers of gallery space.

-Louvre Abu Dhabi
A floating 24,000sq m dome will house the Louvre on Saadiyat Island. Jean Nouvel's web-patterned roof will filter sun into the building, inspired by the idea of rays passing through palm fronds in an oasis. Long term loans from the Louvre, Centre Georges Pompidou, Musee d'Orsay and Versailles will be on display.

On a smaller scale the emirate of Ras Al-Khaimah is building a new eponymous capital city, courtesy of Dutch architects OMA. This Tower, a gateway to the city, is the work of Snohetta in Norway, and will be clad in ceramic panels.
The 200m-high tower, which starts construction later this year, will be the setting for a five-star hotel along with the usual conference centre , exhibition halls and retail space.

The Rotating Tower And The Qibla

I was reading an article in the Elaph electronic newspaper 22/01/2007 about a rotating building/tower to be built in Dubaiwith four rotating penthouses and a rotating villa that has its own car lift. The new tower will be located in Jumeirah Village South and will contain 72 units. The rotating units are able to rotate 360 degrees and residents can choose if they want the rotation to occur in three, six, 12 or 24 hours...
What caught my attention and to my amusement was a comment left by one of the readers...

I couldn't stop laughing....Mr Alnakawa has a problem locating the Qibla

With all respect to the Qibla and what it represents....For crying out loud...Please get a life....lol

The first remarkable close-up pictures of animals in the womb

Using an array of technology, the images reveal what until now has been a secret - exactly how animals develop in the womb. They were created by the same team who in 2004 showed how human embryos "walk in the womb".

Using a combination of three-dimensional ultrasound scans, computer graphics and tiny cameras, the team were able to show the entire process from conception to birth.

"These kind of images from inside animals have never been seen before," said Jeremy Dear of Pioneer Productions, who made the film.

"We worked with dozens of zoos and animal sanctuaries across the world. There were a lot of different challenges - recording a dolphin is very different from an elephant, for instance.

"Animals were trained to sit still near the scanners and we also inserted cameras into the womb via the elephant's rectum-But it has been worth it. It one sequence we follow an elephant developing. When it is finally born, there is not a dry eye in the house.

"The images in the film are a testament to the ingenuity and patience of the production team led by Yavar Abbas and Dr David Barlow, who worked with some of the world's leading vets to obtain these pictures."

The images were created for the programme Animals In The Womb, a two-hour show to be broadcast on the National Geographic Channel in America next month and on Channel 4 and the National Geographic Channel in the UK next year.

Researchers used scans to track elephant calves developing for almost two years in the womb - the longest gestation period of all mammals.

It shows at 16 weeks the elephant foetus starting to look more like an elephant as the trunk develops.

At almost a year, the trunk is longer than the legs, and by 14 months, the characteristic elephant ears are visible. They will eventually grow to almost two feet across to help regulate the body temperature of the fullymature-elephant. At birth, he will weigh nearly 260lb and be able to take his first steps in minutes.

Animals closer to home were also studied. A golden retriever foetus is shown exhibiting some of the same behaviour as family pets, panting with its tongue out, while still in the womb.

Programme makers also reveal the moment at eight weeks when a baby dolphin learns to swim while in the womb. During the next few weeks, it develops flippers, a tail and a blowhole before being born after a year, and must be able to quickly swim to the surface to take its first breath of air.

Experts also found that at 24 days, the dolphin embryo develops tiny leg-like buds, which then disappear over the next two weeks.

After 11 weeks, the dolphin embryo's fins display bone structures resembling human hands, which experts believe may show that dolphin ancestors were land dwellers.

The footage also shows how many animal embryos are like human ones.

"The incredible thing about the early images is how we all look very similar - it is obviously we humans share a common mammalian ancestry very early in life," said Mr Dear.
